THE FIFTH NEW ENGLAND CHINESE DANCE COMPETITION

EVENT ORGANIZATION

  • The American Chinese Art Society (ACAS) will be sponsoring the Fifth New England Chinese Dance Competition on Saturday, April 2, 2011, at the ACAS Activity Center.  The Competition is a not-for-profit event.  Beginning in 2005, the New England Chinese Dance Competition has been held every other year.

ELIGIBILITY

  • The Competition is open to all amateur dancers.

CATEGORIES

  • Competitors will compete in six(6) categories and three(3) dance types(Classical; Folk: Minority).  Category placement will be determined by competitor age on the day of the competition.  ACAS reserves the right to cancel or combine a given category of competition due to insufficient number of entrants (Each category must have a minimum of three entrants).  The registration fees will be refunded in case a category is canceled.
  • Solo – ages 12 and under     
  • Duet or Trio - ages 12 and under         
  • Group – ages 12 and under
  • Solo – ages 13 and above     
  • Duet or Trio - ages 13 and above
  • Group – ages 13 and above

REGISTRATION

  • The registration fee schedule is as follows:

Solo         $ 50

Duet or Trio $ 30 per person

Group        $ 15 per person

  • An application form and registration fee must be received by ACAS by February 28, 2011.
  • There will be no registration fee refunds for accepted competitors.
  • The Competition will only accept 50 entries.  Competitors will be accepted on a first come, first come first served basis.  Full registration fee will be refunded to competitor who cannot be scheduled.
  • Audition schedule will be mailed 2 weeks before the Competition.

PROGRAM PROCEDURE

  • Competitors will be announced by number only and shall not commence before the signal is given.
  • Time limit for each dance is 6'30" minutes. The judges reserve the right to disqualify a dance which runs significantly over the time limit.
  • The Awards Ceremony will immediate follow the Competition.

MUSIC

  • All dance music must be recorded on analog cassette tapes or CD with good sound quality.
  • One dance per tape or per CD and labeled with: Competitor’s name(s); Dance Number; indicate off stage “On” if music begins with the dancer(s) on stage, “Off” if the music begins with the dancer(s)

ADJUDICATION

  • There will be two prominent judges. Their names will be announced at a later date.

 

SCORING

  • The judges will score the competitors on the basis of presentation, technique, and choreography.
  • Decisions of the judges shall be final.

AWARDS

  • Final decisions will be announced right after the Competition.
  • The first place winners of each category will receive a trophy and cash award of $100 for Solo,  $150 for Duet or Trio, and $200 for Group. In addition, first place winners will have the opportunity to perform at the ACAS 25th Annual Chinese Dance Festival at 1:30PM and 7:30PM on June 25, 2011 at the Tsai Performance Center, Boston University.
  • The second place winner of each category will receive a trophy and cash award of $60 for Solo, $ 80 for Duet or Trio, and $100 for Group.
  • In the case of ties, the cash award will be divided equally among the competitors.
  • Honorable mentions will also chosen in each category.
  • The judges reserve the right not to give the first or second place award in any category of the Competition.

  • A “ Most Promising Dancer ” $300 will be awarded by the Jessica Chu Memorial Fund.

ADMITTANCE POLICY

  • No children under the age of four will be admitted.
  • Any competitor who attempts to speak to the judges under any condition is subject to disqualification.
  • Absolutely no photo and video taking is allowed during the Competition, excepting photographer of the auspices. 
  • Photographs are welcome during the Awards Ceremony.
