On the first day of the Workshop, all students will be placed into classes based on age. The curriculum for each level is designed to be challenging as well as best fitting for that stage of the student's development.
All student will receive a minimum of 4 hours dance lesson each day. In addition, there will be other course & activities aimed at improving their overall performing arts capabilities.
At the end of the workshop, all students will have an opportunity to join the Final Performance Program on August 14, 2010 at the ACAS Activity Center in front of their family and friends.
JADE LIN is the co-founder and Executive Director of the American Chinese Art Society. She has long been recognized in the New England area for her exceptional contributions to traditional Chinese dance. In 1955, she was presented with "The Pride of Newton Award" to recognize her excellence in the arts and was selected by the Newton Women's Commission for recognition in a photo exhibit highlighting women as a major contributor in the field of Cultural Arts in year 2000. She also received formal recognition for "Outstanding Contributions Cultural Exchange" from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts State Senate and House of Representatives in July, 1989. Among her notable invited productions, Ms. Lin served as one of the choreographers for the 25th anniversary season of the Mandala Folk Dance Ensemble in 1990, and she choreographed "The Great Tea House", a new
musical drama produced by Millennium Music Center in May 2001. Ms. Lin received the 2002 Community Service Award at the Asian American Unity Dinner, Inc. to recognize her "exceptional devotion, dedication and skill in introducing Chinese art and culture to those in Greater Boston, particularly to children." Ms. Lin's accomplishments in Chinese Dance were recognized by Chinese Culture Connection that chose her as their recipient of the 2007 Outstanding Achievement Award. Most recently, Ms. Lin became the first recipient in the Boston area of a prestigious "Hai-Hwa Honor Award" in recognition of her outstanding contributions to advancing the artistic heritage and promotion Chinese culture in Chinese communities. Ms Lin is the choreographer and artistic producer of the Traditional Chinese Dance Troupe of the American Chinese Art Society. Over the years, she has taught traditional Chinese dance in many organizations including Lexington Chinese Language School, Newton Cantonese Chinese School, Greater Boston Chinese Cultural Association, Radcliffe Asian American Dance Troupe at Harvard University.
JESSICA JONE was born in Vancouver, and received her early dance training from her mother, Lorita Leung. Ms. Jone later went on to train professionally in Chinese classical and folk dance at the Beijing Dance Academy, and the Guangdong Dance School in China. Ms. Jone is also trained in Western dance, and is a graduate of the contemporary dance program at Simon Fraser University. She is an accomplished dancer and seasoned performer who has won many awards for performance and choreography, including the Chairman’s Award at the Fourth Peach and Plum Dance Competition in Beijing, and two Choreography Awards at the North American Chinese Dance Competition. Jessica is a Director of the Scotiabank Dance Centre in Vancouver, Canada.
Ms. Jessica Jone will in charge of "Chinese Dance" classes in the ACAS Chinese Dance Summer Workshop 2010.
DAVID SUN has been teaching ballet extensively throughout the Northeast since 1989, working at Boston Ballet, Boston College, and Jose Mateo's Ballet Theatre of Boston, amongst many other schools. He continues to teach in the Greater Boston/Southern NH area, including at The Ballet Space in Framingham, MA since it opened in 2005, and at Southern NH Dance Theater from its inception in 1996. Mr. SUN has taught master classes at the Portsmouth (NH) School of Ballet, Brandeis University, and New Hampshire School of Ballet, as well as in PA and Washington, D.C.. Mr. Sun received his early ballet training as a scholarship student with Richard Thomas and Barbara Fallis in New York City, performed with many regional dance groups in NYC, TX, and New England, worked as an actor on CBS, and as a photographer with national credits including Vogue, The New York Times, Dance Magazine, Dance Spirit, Boston Ballet, and Southern NH Dance Theater. Mr. Sun will in charge of "Ballet Training" classes in the ACAS Chinese Dance Summer Workshop 2010.
DEIDRE WILLIAMS Bachelor of Art degree from Boston University. Presently on staff as a jazz teacher at the Lexington School of Ballet. Also works as a choreographer for
figure skaters at the Skating Club of Boston. Previously received dance training at the Jeanette Neille Dance Studio in Boston Rater was a scholarship student at Steps on Broadway
in NYC where she also did various jobs dancing professionally including theme park and television work.
Ms. Williams will in charge of " Jazz Training" classes in the ACAS Chinese Dance Summer Workshop 2010.
CHRISTIN COLLINS Christin started dancing at the Lexington School of Ballet at age four, concentration in ballet, character, and jazz. She has also received training from Summer Stages Dance at Concord Academy, Dana Hall School, and Boston University. She has much experience in performing hip-hop, as well as multiple types of modern dance. Ms. Collins choreographs for the studio and the stage, including recent work for elementary school and musicals. In 2005, Ms. Collins was a gold medalist at both the regional and national American Dance Awards competitions. She is currently a jazz teacher at the Lexington School of Ballet, a guest jazz and hip-hop teacher at the Brookline Academy of Dance, and an active performer at Boston University.
Ms. Collins will in charge of "Hip-Hop Training" classes in the ACAS Chinese Dance Summer Workshop 2010.
ANGELA LEE began dancing at the age of five. Due to her love for dance and Chinese culture, she joined the ACAS Traditional Chinese Dance Troupe at it inception in 1985, and was Vice Leader from 1989 to 1991.
Ms. Lee worked as a Teacher's Assistant for the Lexington Chinese Language School dance class from 1989-1991 for Ms. Jade Lin. Ms. Lee is a currently a high school history teacher in Weston, and enjoys working with young people. Since January of 2005-2007, Ms. Lee has become an Assistant Choreographer and Instructor for the Traditional Chinese Dance Troupe of the American Chinese Art Society.
Ms. Lee will in charge of "Stage Makeup" classes in the ACAS Chinese Dance Summer Workshop 2010.
MELISSA LEWIS is an Assistant Choreographer and Instructor for the Traditional Chinese Dance Troupe of the American Chinese Art Society and has been a member of the Traditional Chinese Dance Troupe of ACAS for eight years. She also is one of the principle dancer of the Traditional Chinese Dance Troupe. She performed at various community cultural and festival and other events throughout New-England area. During summer vacations, she traveled with the Troupe and performed at Olympic Cultural Festival in Beijing in 2007 and on Carnival-Victory Cruise Ship in 2006. She is planning to attend the ACAS Taiwan Performing Trip in July 1, 2010.
Ms. Lewis was a second place winner of Solo Dance in Chinese Minority Dance category at The 4th New England Chinese Dance Competition.
Melissa Lewis will in charge of "Chinese Basic" classes in the ACAS Chinese Dance Workshop 2010.
COUNSEL IN TRAINING PROGRAM
The Chinese Dance Summer Workshop is recruiting three qualified CITs to help supervise group rehearsals in the studio. Tuition is waived, free lunch is provided and each CIT will be paid $ 150.00.
