On the first day of the Workshop, all students will be placed into classes based on age. The curriculum for each level is designed to be challenging as well as best fitting for that stage of the student's development.
All student will receive a minimum of 4 hours dance lesson each day. In addition, there will be other course & activities aimed at improving their overall performing arts capabilities.
At the end of the workshop, all students will have an opportunity to join the Final Performance Program on July 25, 2009 at the ACAS Activity Center in front of their family and friends.
JADE LIN is the co-founder and Executive Director of the American Chinese Art Society. She has long been recognized in the New England area for her exceptional contributions
to traditional Chinese dance. In 1955, she was presented with "The Pride of Newton Award" to recognize her excellence in the arts and was selected by the Newton Women's
Commission for recognition in a photo exhibit highlighting women as a major contributor in the field of Cultural Arts in year 2000. She also received formal recognition for "Outstanding
Contributions Cultural Exchange" from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts State Senate and House of Representatives in July, 1989. Among her notable invited productions,
Ms. Lin served as one of the choreographers for the 25th anniversary season of the Mandala Folk Dance Ensemble in 1990, and she choreographed "The Great Tea House", a new
musical drama produced by Millennium Music Center in May 2001. Ms. Lin received the 2002 Community Service Award at the Asian American Unity Dinner, Inc. to recognize
her "exceptional devotion, dedication and skill in introducing Chinese art and culture to those in Greater Boston, particularly to children." Most recently, Ms. Lin's accomplishments
in Chinese Dance were recognized by Chinese Culture Connection that chose her as their recipient of the 2007 Outstanding Achievement Award.Since 1985, Ms Lin has been the
choreographer and artistic director of the Traditional Chinese Dance Troupe of the American Chinese Art Society. Over the years, she has taught traditional Chinese dance in many
organizations including Lexington Chinese Language School, Newton Cantonese Chinese School, Greater Boston Chinese Cultural Association, Radcliffe Asian American Dance Troupe
at Harvard University. Currently, she is also the choreographer and dance instructor of ACAS Dance Studio.
JESSICA JONE was born in Vancouver, and received her early dance training from her mother, Lorita Leung. Ms. Jone later went on to train professionally in Chinese classical and folk dance at the Beijing Dance Academy, and the Guangdong Dance School in China. Ms. Jone is also trained in Western dance, and is a graduate of the contemporary dance program at Simon Fraser University. She is an accomplished dancer and seasoned performer who has won many awards for performance and choreography, including the Chairman’s Award at the Fourth Peach and Plum Dance Competition in Beijing, and two Choreography Awards at the North American Chinese Dance Competition. Jessica is a Director of the Scotiabank Dance Centre in Vancouver, Canada.
Ms. Jessica Jone will in charge of "Chinese Dance" classes in the ACAS Chinese Dance Summer Workshop 2009.
JOANNA ZHOU received her Master Degree of Dance in Higher Education at New York University. She was born and raised in China, where she studied with many famous dance artists and gained her BFA in Dance Performance at the Central University for Nationalities. She received several awards in different dance competitions in both China and Us. Joanna is currently a member of national Dance Education Organization and serves as choreographer and teacher in NYC and Boston area while conducting master classes and workshops all over US. She specialized in Chinese dance, Modern dance, Ballet and Jazz. Joanna is a master teacher and adjudicator for various national dance competitions and is the creator of her Chinese Culture & Dance Curriculum for children and adults. Joanna will in charge of the “Chinese Basic” and “Stage Acting” classes.
MARY VASEL operated and instructed her own ballet school for 33 years until January, 2006. She is presently teaching ballet for the ACAS Dance Studio with Jade Lin. Prior to devoting herself to teaching ballet, Mrs. Vasel danced professionally throughout New England and also performed with the Boston Ballet Company under it’s founder, E. Virginia Williams. She danced at the White House for President Johnson and The Apollo Astronauts in 1968 with three other Boston Ballet Co. Dancers. She won the title of “Miss Massachusetts – World” that same year and was one of 10 semi-finalists in the “Miss U.S.A” pageant in San Diego. Sharing her love of dance with students over the years enabled many to carry dance into their adult lives recreationally and professionally. She looks forward to her 6th year as ballet instructor for the 2009 Chinese Dance Summer Workshop.
DEIDRE WILLIAMS Bachelor of Art degree from Boston University. Presently on staff as a jazz teacher at the Lexington School of Ballet. Also works as a choreographer for
figure skaters at the Skating Club of Boston. Previously received dance training at the Jeanette Neille Dance Studio in Boston Rater was a scholarship student at Steps on Broadway
in NYC where she also did various jobs dancing professionally including theme park and television work.
Ms. Williams will in charge of " Jazz Training" classes in the ACAS Chinese Dance Summer Workshop 2009.
CHRISTIN COLLINS Christin started dancing at the Lexington School of Ballet at age four, concentration in ballet, character, and jazz. She has also received training from Summer
Stages Dance at Concord Academy, Dana Hall School, and Boston University. She has much experience in performing hip-hop, as well as multiple types of modern dance. Christin
choreographs for the studio and the stage, including recent work for elementary school and musicals. In 2005, she was a gold medalist at both the regional and national American Dance
Awards competitions. Christin is currently a jazz teacher at the Lexington School of Ballet, a guest jazz and hip-hop teacher at the Brookline Academy of Dance, and an active performer
at Boston University.
Ms. Collins will in charge of "Hip-Hop Training" classes in the ACAS Chinese Dance Summer Workshop 2009.
COUNSEL IN TRAINING PROGRAM
The Chinese Dance Summer Workshop is recruiting three qualified CITs to help supervise group rehearsals in the studio. Tuition is waived, free lunch is provided and each CIT will be paid $ 150.00. THE FIRST CHINESE DANCE SPRING WORKSHOP
American Chinese Art Society will hold the First Chinese Dance Spring Workshop in the coming Spring Vacation (April 20, 2009 ~ April 25, 2009) at ACAS Activity Center, 29 Montvale Ave., Woburn, MA 01801. There will be two classes for students at least ages 6 and above (class size will be limited to 20 students and will be accepted on a first come, first served basis). Curriculum will included Chinese Basic; Movement Exploration; Anatomy for Dance Improvisation; Theater Acting; Theater Improvisation; and A Solo Dance. There will be a performance at the last day of the Workshop.
